United States Government regulations for the J-1 Au Pair visa have requirements for any host family wishing to hire an au pair from abroad to live with the family and provide childcare.

One of the most important responsibilities of a host family is to treat the visiting au pair as a member of the family and not as a family servant.

Some of the important host family requirements are listed below.

HOST FAMILY REQUIREMENTS


Host families are carefully selected and rigorously screened before being matched with an au pair. The following are some of the requirements of host families to make sure the au pair experience is an excellent experience for everyone.

 

All Host Families must meet certain requirements as set forth by the Department of State and Au Pair Foundation.
Complete Au Pair Foundation’s Host Family Application
Complete and pass the Host Family Background Check
Willingness to accept the Au Pair as a member of the family and not a domestic servant
Meet with the Au Pair Foundation Local Community Representative in your area and undergo a Host Family Interview and Pre-Arrival Orientation
Provide a private room for the Au Pair
Provide at least two Host Family character references
Create a schedule for an Au Pair not to exceed 45 hours a week, or 10 hours per day
Possess the financial resources to cover the weekly stipend of $195.75
Facilitate Au Pair’s participation in Cultural Immersion events
Agree to facilitate the enrollment and attendance of Au Pairs in an accredited, post-secondary institution and to contribute up to $500 towards the Au Pair’s completion of the required course work
Abide by Department of State Rules and Regulations governing the Au Pair program

All Host Families must meet certain requirements as set forth by the United States Department of State and by authorized sponsors.

Complete the Sponsor's Host Family Application (this application will become available to the au pair)

Complete and pass the Host Family Background Check

Be willing to accept the au pair as a member of the family and not a domestic servant

Meet with the Sponsor's Local Community Representative in the host family home area and undergo a Host Family Interview and Pre-Arrival Orientation

Provide a private room for the Au Pair to live in during the one year program

Provide at least two host family character references

Create a childcare schedule for the au pair not to exceed 45 hours in any week, or 10 hours on any day

Possess the financial resources to cover the weekly stipend of $195.75 (or $146.81 for EduCare)

Facilitate the au pair’s participation in events and activities providing cultural immersion experience for the au pair

Facilitate the enrollment and attendance of the au pair in an accredited, post-secondary institution and contribute up to $500 ($1000 for EduCare) towards the au pair’s completion of the required course work

Abide by Department of State Rules and Regulations governing the Au Pair program
